Veterans Day activities planned

Veterans will be honored with numerous activities this coming weekend.

The public is invited to a Jackson High School assembly honoring veterans at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the Event Center. A reception will follow in the Commons.

Many businesses and government offices will be closed on Friday in honor of Veterans Day. Jackson’s trash collection and Recycling Center hours will be affected by the holiday. Cape Girardeau’s curbside trash and recycling will also be affected; Thursday’s pickup will be on Wednesday and Friday’s pickup will be on Thursday.

An “Honor and Remember Military Display” will be open to the public at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 through Sunday, Nov. 12. View Jeff Pind’s Military Veterans Memorial in the chapel at the Veterans Home, 2400 Veterans Memorial Drive.

Take a drive through the Avenue of Flags in Cape Girardeau County Park North or visit the flag display at Brookside Park in Jackson.

Jackson’s American Legion Post 158 and VFW Post 10495 will present a Veterans Day parade in Uptown Jackson on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The parade will start at 4 p.m. in front of the Jackson Frozen Food Locker on South High Street.

This year’s theme is “The Grand Old Flag.” The parade marshal will be Mike Hess. There will be a float for veterans to ride on and the Southeast Missouri Rotary Club Service will give away small flags to children along the parade route.

Veterans may take free tours of state parks and historic sites Nov. 10-12. Veterans camping Saturday night in a state park will receive a voucher for a free night of camping.
