Shirley Jean Hutton

Funeral service for Shirley Jean Hutton of Jackson, will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. The Rev. Karen Dumey will officiate. Interment will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Arrangements were handled by McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

Shirley, 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, March 29, 2021. She was born April 4, 1930, in Chillicothe, the daughter of Clyde Glenwood and Margaret Mary Gall Finney. She married Dr. Walter William Hutton May 24, 1952, in Kirksville. He passed away July 31, 2003.

Shirley was a 1948 graduate of Linneus High School (class of eight people). She then attended Kirksville Teacher’s College for three years. In 1951, she moved to St. Louis and worked for the FBI office; in 1952 she worked at the hospital in Moberly while Walter interned. In 1953, she and Walter moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, before moving to Keytesville in 1955. She and Walter moved to Jackson in 1956 and in 1957, she went to work for the Corp of Engineers while the flood wall in Cape Girardeau was being built. In 1964, she started her 25 year career with the Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Services Agency, retiring in 1989.

Shirley was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson. She was an active member of the church, with the church club, the youth group, Sunday School Department, and wherever else a need would arise, she could be counted on.

She served as the former president of the PEO “DJ” Chapter 2001-2003, and she was very involved with the GFWC and was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women’s group at the church.

She is survived by those who loved her: Michael (Linda) Finney of New Hope, MN, Susie (Doug) Buttery of Granby, CO, (their daughter Jess); Kathy (Breck Tucker) Finney of Hannibal (their children, Brent Mehlenbacher and Danielle (Greg) Beck and their children, Libby and Marley); Patrick (Dawn) Finney of Columbia (their children, Ian and Isolde); Eric (Martha) Venable, Jessica (Darin) Teague (their children, Tucker and Carter), and Isaac (Brook) Venable and (their children, Bode and Collins), all of Jackson. In addition to her husband, Walter of 51 years, Shirley was preceded in death by three sons, William Kirt Hutton, Scott Glenwood Hutton, and Evan Lee Hutton and a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald Lovene (Margaret Ann) Finney.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to First Presbyterian Church in Jackson.
