The Cape Girardeau Police Department will be receiving a grant following Thursday’s county commission meeting to help enhance safety for the department.
The county approved a memorandum of understanding with the City of Cape for JAG Funds in the amount of $20,877 for the purchase of 18 complete communication equipment packages. The communication packages will work with the department’s existing equipment, rather than requiring the purchase of new radios.
“The communication equipment will enhance officer’s safety and operational effectiveness by providing department personnel with reliable answering access to the department’s existing radio communication system during tactical responses, critical incidents and other law enforcement operations,” Cape Police Chief Adam Glueck said.
In other action:
• Commissioners approved Ethan Larko’s Eagle Scout project to replace the North Cape County Park entrance sign.
Due to the construction and dirt work at the North Park, the sign was removed. Larko plans to construct a sign that will match the South Park entrance sign, which was also and Eagle Scout project.
He will reuse the letters from the previous sign and it will also be lit for better visibility.
Cape County Park Superintendent Bryan Sander said his department will assist in pouring the concrete for the new sign to prepare Larko to stack and glue blocks.
“It’s quite a process, you can’t just go in there and start stacking blocks,” Sander said. “Each block is glued and we fill so far with concrete.”
• The commission received eight bids for mass notification system and referred the bids to emergency management for review.
• Commissioners approved the annual contribution election for county employee’s retirement with no changes from last year.
• The commission approved Equitable for county employee’s ancillary benefit package at a 6% decrease and a two year rate guarantee.
• Commissioners approved human resources to review third party administrator’s plans for health insurance and determine if other proposals are needed.
